Let's Put a Scope to Work (Chapter 7)
generally used for three types of measurements
Amplitude Measurements
  1. pick a voltage scale
if there is a variable scale control make sure voltage scale selection switch is in the calibrated position
  2. check 10x probe compensation
not really important for sine waves and RF
misadjustment will distort other types of wave forms
  3. set a zero reference
  4. count number of centimeters on the vertical scale
multiply number of cm by voltage scale
if probe is in 10x position multiply result by 10
voltmeters measure RMS voltages
scopes measure peak-to-peak
divide peak-to-peak by 2 then multiply by 0.707 to get RMS for sine wave
Alignment with a Sweep Generator
common voltage measurements requires signal generator producing a signal at frequecies of interest or sweep generator
